Today, Honduras is a major source of child migrants coming to the United States. The United States was a partner to the 2009 military coup that ousted the country’s democratically elected President Manuel Zelaya. And, the U.S.-backed post-coup government has caused increases in violence. It has become standard operating procedure for the United States to over-throw elected officials in Latin American countries and to replace them with dictators 'friendly to American interests'.
In the most recent times, the United States war on drugs has altered conditions in the area for the worse. That people want to flee the area is not surprising. That they want to come to the United States is not surprising.
We can all believe that restoring order was at the top of the list of U.S. goals. Nobody who has any knowledge of the region could possibly believe her statement regarding 'ensure that free and fair elections could be held'.
That our primary goal with the children who risk 'everything' to get to this country is to immediately send them back is completely consistent with our history.
We have always had great influence in Central America and, unfortunately, it has been and continues to be mostly negative.
