During periods of time when the populace believe they can participate in the dreams offered by the society in which they live, they are easily controlled. When people believe that they will 'get their turn', they line up nicely and wait patiently for the opportunity that they know is heading their way. When the future looks good, people invest in that future by working hard and saving. People sacrifice to educate their children for the 'good life' just ahead.
The police believe they have the authority to brutalize and kill anyone for any reason. For example, reporters covering the police murder of a black teenager and the protests that followed were themselves brutalized:
"Ryan J. Reilly of the Huffington Post and Wesley Lowery of the Washington Post were arrested in August 2014 in McDonald's while covering mass protests... Lowery reported being "assaulted and arrested" because "officers decided we weren't leaving McDonald's quickly enough. Reilly said police shoved his head into glass during the detention."
"Lowery and Reilly were just two of many journalists subjected to arbitrary arrests, physical force, gassing, rubber bullet fire, and intimidation by police for doing their jobs during last summer's military-style curfew and police repression of protests and media coverage... It was in this context that Lowery, who is currently in Ferguson covering the protests, received his summons—dated August 6, 2015—which states that he is being charged with trespassing on private property and interfering with a police officer because he did not comply with "commands" to exit." We've all been watching as the police have become a domestic military force with tanks and troop carriers and extreme combat gear. There can be no doubt they are planning to use this equipment. The citizens of this country need to be ready. As the saying goes, "you ain't seen nothing yet!"
