We are living on the very edge. The alarms are going off all around us. The difficulty is that very few of us are listening. We have become 'tone-deaf' to the sound of these alarms in our greed for more and more wealth. Today, we still have a tiny opportunity to save some of the life on this planet, perhaps our own. But, we are closing that little window of opportunity very quickly. Global warming is here and it is here to stay throughout the lifetime of as many human generations into the future that we are able to imagine. We don't have to imagine very far to see the end of human generations.
It is pretty much over already. The world will lose approximately half of all living species by the end of this century regardless of anything that we attempt to do towards saving them. We have already passed that particular 'tipping point'. Most likely, that by itself will not be the ultimate demise of humanity, but it will certainly mean that those humans of the future will be living in a world unlike the world we see today... because that world will be populated with half of today's creatures (plant and animal) missing from the scene.
It is hard to imagine what that actually means. So far, we've not catalogued who will survive this century and who will not.
And we still have those telling us that everything is ok! Is Global Warming a Hoax? The authors state:
"Despite the overwhelming evidence against human-caused global warming, why is actual temperature data consistently ignored? Current climate fluctuations are trivial and well within historical limits. They prove that catastrophic global warming is a hoax. Though all the information presented here is publicly available and well known in both scientific and political circles, why does this false notion prevail that mankind is destroying the planet? Could the motive behind such madness be something other than saving the Earth?
Depending upon one's purpose, one can select among the data and using 'facts' present almost any conclusion one wants to present. The writers of the "hoax" article frequently refer to Obama which really reveals much of their attitude. To believe Obama is directing the world of scientists planet wide is beyond belief.
In 2008, climate change sceptic Roger Pielke Sr said this: “Global warming, as diagnosed by upper ocean heat content has not been occurring since 2004”. It is a fine example of denialist spin, making several extraordinary leaps:
• that one symptom is indicative of the state of an entire malaise (e.g. not being short of breath one day means your lung cancer is cured).
• that one can claim significance about a four year period when it’s too short to draw any kind of conclusion
• that global warming has not been occurring on the basis of ocean temperatures alone
So much for the hype. What does the science say about the temperature of the oceans – which, after all, constitute about 70% of the Earth’s surface? The oceans store approximately 80% of all the energy in the Earth’s climate, so ocean temperatures are a key indicator for global warming.
Claims that the ocean has been cooling are correct. Claims that global warming has stopped are not. It is an illogical position: the climate is subject to a lot of natural variability, so the premise that changes should be ‘monotonic’ – temperatures rising in straight lines – ignores the fact that nature doesn’t work like that. This is why scientists normally discuss trends – 30 years or more – so that short term fluctuations can be seen as part of a greater pattern. (Other well-known cyclic phenomena like El Nino and La Nina play a part in these complex interactions).(source)
Are we humans, with our large brains, simply not smart enough to see what is happening and to react in a responsible manner to save ourselves?
More than 400 scientists from 58 countries on three continents determined in their annual planetary exam that the temperatures of the earth's surfaces are rising to historic highs, greenhouse gases continue to climb, and when it comes to the oceans, warming is unstoppable.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the American Meteorological Society's State of the Climate 2014 annual report, published Thursday, delivers a grim assessment of trends that were already well-established.
"Even if we were to freeze greenhouse gases at current levels, the sea would actually continue to warm for centuries and millennia, and as they continue to warm and expand the sea levels will continue to rise," Greg Johnson, an oceanographer for NOAA's Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory, told a conference call for reporters.
"The variety of indicators shows us how our climate is changing, not just in temperature but from the depths of the oceans to the outer atmosphere." (source)
Currently we seek greater wealth by drilling for oil in the Arctic. There are lawsuits to stop it, but based upon history, Shell will probably continue and drilling will begin. That means another decade of building infrastructure to pump and transport Arctic oil. Other Arctic drilling will also take place, especially once all of the facilities are in place.
Ultimately there will be more environmental disasters taking place: more pipelines bursting, more oil trains over-turning and spilling and more polluted land, air and water. In the Arctic, especially, this means more death and destruction for wild life both plant and animal.
We are currently building a bigger, wider canal from the Atlantic to the Pacific to more efficiently move more 'freight' on bigger, wider ships which consume more fuel. There is no end in sight of our desire to plunder the earths resources. There is an end in sight for life on this planet as we have know it.
