During debates of the Republican candidates' for president, one could be deceived into believing that President Obama had cut the U.S. military budget by some huge amount and that we are now standing defenseless in the face of aggression. The truth is the exact opposite. In spite of Obama's demented foreign policy, money for war is not lacking. The truth is that Obama has authored the largest U.S. military budget since the Second World War.
Obama recently signed a budget providing military spending at nearly $578 billion, including about $64 billion for overseas wars and $17.9 billion to improve our ability to kill using nuclear weapons.
The U.S. military receives more money than the next 9 largest militaries in the world all combined. This includes: China, Saudi Arabia, Russia, U.K., France, Japan, India, Germany & South Korea.
We really cannot afford to spend all of this money on dominating the world with military force even though we claim that our economy has 'recovered'. Of course, that 'recovery' of the economy means only that the elite are doing well. The rest of us, not so well.
For purely economic justifications we are tearing down houses that don't seem to be producing the correct margin of profits. Judges in the Chicago area ordered 1,154 buildings, most of them homes, razed last year.
So, there it is. We spend enormous amounts of money to kill people around the world. The economy is reported to be in 'recovery'. We are tearing down housing. And, on top of everything else, we have homeless people.
Because the economy is slanted toward the rich becoming richer and the poor becoming more and more poor, we have a situation where many people who have jobs and work within the economy cannot afford to live within that same economy. Also many lose their jobs as those jobs are shipped over-seas through the guise of 'trade agreements'.
To avoid sleeping on the pavement, many are 'doubling up' with relatives and friends or sleeping in cars and abandoned buildings (until those buildings are torn down).
Many of those who are homeless are also those patriots who went off to fight in our wars of aggression and have returned 'home' to live on the streets, hoping for a hand-out... the same ones you walk past as if you didn't notice that they were there... invisible as it were!
To go off and fight in a war is subject to inflict great damage on a person. Much of that damage is not apparent visually. And then to return home, wounded, to find no jobs available, poor systems of assistance (medical or otherwise) and finally to have to live on the street in the 'richest' country in the world indicates something about who we are as a nation... therein defines the popular phrase "American Exceptionalism" !!!
